„Protecting the 2024 Elections“ with Maria Ressa & Frances Haugen – March 6th, 3-6 pm
How the DSA can protect democracy by meaningfully addressing the virality of disinformation and hate speech
Societies across Europe are becoming more polarised, and widespread disinformation undermines trust in democratic institutions and electoral processes. In light of the looming risks facing the 2024 European elections, rigorous enforcement of the Digital Services Act (DSA) is crucial – and with the integrity of European democracy at stake, the responsibility is monumental.
With outstanding speakers such as:
- Frances Haugen, Former Facebook Employee & Whistleblower; Advocate for Public Oversight of Social Media
- Maria Ressa, CEO of Rappler, Journalist, Author, Freedom Advocate and 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Winner
See all speakers and register here for participating live at European Parliament.
This event will explore electoral integrity in the online information space with a particular focus on engagement-based ranking and incentivising the production of divisive content. How can DSA implementation support the integrity of elections? What can platforms do to stop harmful amplification? What can the European Commission do to make sure that elections take place in a safe online environment?
This event will be co-chaired by MEPs Sandro Gozi, Renew Europe and Paul Tang, Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats. It will be livestreamed on YouTube.
